ReplyDeleteQuestions:
1. Tyrone is a naturally outgoing child, how might a reduced speech capacity affect his cognitive, educational, and interpersonal development?
a. As Tyrone’s CP progresses and affects his speech Tyrone may begin to feel frustrated and overwhelmed. If he cannot communicate effectively, this may affect his relationships and cause some feelings of loneliness and isolation. Cognitively, this will not stunt his development but it might appear that way because of the difficulty of assessment without verbal feedback. His school environment may also become a little more restrictive if he is unable to communicate effectively with the mainstream teachers.
2. What are some of the possible treatment strategies for CP patients who have experienced a reduction in speech abilities?
Patients with CP who have experienced a reduction in speech capabilities may want to seek out a speech pathologist to receive therapy on how to cope with a new way of communication. His parents and teachers might want to start looking into investing in assistive technology if his speech is projected to deteriorate further. One assistive technology device is an eye gaze that can be used with just Tyrone’s eyes.
3. What are typical developmental milestones for a 12 year old?
Typical milestones for a 12 year old are showing more concern about body image, experiencing moodiness, showing more interest and influence by peer group, and feelings of stress from schoolwork. They are cognitively able for more complex thought, expressing feelings through talking, and developing a stronger sense of right and wrong. Because of these typical milestones, Tyrone will be facing a lot of hardship, but because of his strong family being an amazing support system, Tyrone has great resiliency and isn’t letting it bother him too much.
